Upon graduation from the University of Toledo Medical College and completion of an Emergency Medicine Residency at Summa Health System/ Akron City Hospital, David Ernst, MD, FACEP practiced for 17 years as Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and a Board Certified Emergency Physician for the Ohio University College of Medicine and Univ. of Toledo College of Medicine at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Ohio and Flight Physician for Cleveland Metro Life Flight.
In 2004, Dr. Ernst became a Co-Founder of EPOWERdoc, a healthcare software company, where he currently serves as President. He has led the design and development of EPOWERdoc’s Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) and Correctional Medicine Electronic Health Record system. As a result of the unique Provider-centric design of the EDIS, he received the only US Software Utility Patent for Emergency Department Information System software design. Dr. Ernst is also responsible for the design of the EPOWERdoc VitalTelemed Telemedicine EHR software platform, the first Telemed platform that includes a complete EHR with the secure portal, patient registration, documentation with proper medical content for over 130 medical conditions, discharge instructions, e-Prescription, and medical record transfer capability all in one platform.
Dr. Ernst is actively involved in Telemedicine and Freestanding Emergency Center (FEC) Federal and State advocacy for legislative recognition and reimbursement and currently serves as Councilor for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Telehealth Section. He helped to form and is a member of the ACEP Freestanding Emergency Center Section, Founding Member of the National Association of Freestanding Emergency Centers (NAFEC), member of American Academy of Emergency Medicine FEC Committee, HIMSS, ACEP Informatics Section, and ACEP Rural Health Section and American Telehealth Association. He also serves as Chairman of the Membership Committee for Emergency Department Practice Management Association (EDPMA), and is a Board Member and Executive Committee member for EDPMA and involved in their Federal Advocacy efforts for Telemedicine and has lobbied on Capital Hill on many occasions.
Dr. Ernst has co-authored multiple articles and lectures on topics in Emergency Telemedicine and FEC Medicine at multiple national conferences, including the ACEP Scientific Assembly FEC Section meetings, ACEP Urgent Matters Conferences, NAFEC conferences, and the EDPMA Solutions Summit Conferences.
