New Member Spotlight: Emergency Resources Group
Emergency Resources Group, operating since 1978, is one of the oldest independent, emergency medicine physician groups in the United States. ERG provides emergency medicine, wound care, urgent care, telemedicine and other services in northeast Florida and southeast Georgia. For more information on Emergency Resources Group, please click here.
Excerpts from a conversation with Matthew Rill, MD, CEO
Emergency Resources Group (ERG) provides services in 20 sites and employs over 300 medical professionals, mostly in emergency medicine. And, ERG has one of the largest pediatric emergency medicine practices in the region. Dr. Matt Rill has been with ERG since 2003. First, he managed an emergency medicine department, then became the Medical Director at Flagler Hospital, and next he moved into an operational role for the group. Dr. Rill became ERG’s CEO in 2017. ERG prides itself on providing the highest quality of care in all its clinical settings. ERG has won awards in innovation and in teaching and education.
In 2019, ERG created a telemedicine company called Telescope Health which provides white-label telehealth services for medical facilities and for organizations and companies as an employee benefit. Dr. Rill is a co-Founder and CEO of Telescope Health. Telescope helps to ease access to healthcare and in many cases, healthcare problems can be managed before they become a crisis (keeping them out of the emergency department). Telescope Health was recognized for its community leadership as it provided the first COVID testing site in Florida in March 2020 for the city of Jacksonville. The city recognized Telescope Health with a community impact award.
Dr. Rill decided to join EDPMA based on referrals from several members. Dr. Rill highlights that EDPMA’s leadership on advocacy issues and on innovation clinched the decision to join. Dr. Rill said, “I’ve been attending the Solutions Summit for a number of years and have always been impressed by the quality of the conference. In addition, EDPMA’s advocacy for emergency medicine, its’ attention to fighting downcoding from the insurance carriers and its collaborative approach are all important reasons why our group became an EDPMA member.”
Dr. Rill sees innovation in emergency medicine, in particular, in the areas of telehealth and understanding the importance of “taking emergency medicine outside the walls of the emergency department. As patients want to be treated where they are located– at home, in the office, in an urgent care setting or in an emergency department.” Dr. Rill sees telehealth services as an enabler for growing access to healthcare services. Also, Dr. Rill highlights the importance of pursuing the acute unscheduled care model (AUCM). Dr. Rill would like to see EDPMA continue its efforts to support the growth and understanding of how telehealth supports access to care, particularly for emergency medicine practitioners and the acute, unscheduled care model.
Dr. Rill looks forward to joining some of EDPMA committees. There are seven committees focusing on different areas such as Federal health policy, state health policy, coding, and documentation and more. Dr. Rill plans to ask several people on his management team to join a committee or two so they can gain the most out of their EDPMA membership.
